Field trips and events outside of the normal member meetings
Once again the Woodcarvers, Wood Turners, and Woodworkers Association are coming together to decorate a Christmas tree in the annual Festival of Trees and Lights fundraiser for Blank Children’s Hospital programs. The handcrafted wooden ornament tree consistently raises several thousand dollars for Blank each year; overall the Festival has raised $12 million since 1984.
We ask all woodworkers to once again consider donating high quality, hand-made ornaments to the fundraiser. A schedule is outlined below, we also ask for volunteers to help prepare the ornaments for hanging, and to help decorate the tree.
A note - for the last several years Charlene Shellabarger has donated nicely made hand-crafted tree skirts. I don’t have good contact information for her this year, let me know of anyone who has Charlene’s contact information, or who is interested in making a tree skirt this year.
We’re also looking for someone or a group to make or provide a tree topper, designed to be easily removed for transport to its final home.

Festival of Trees & Lights is a three-day public event that is the main fundraiser for Blank Children's Hospital. This annual event is the largest fundraiser for Blank Children's Hospital and is a central Iowa tradition to kick off the holiday season. The 39th Annual Festival of Trees & Lights will feature: beautifully decorated trees, special performances from local music and dance groups, the opportunity to take a photo with Santa, a scavenger hunt, fun crafts and activities, and the chance to read impactful stories of children cared for at Blank Children's. In addition, visitors can shop the Holiday Gift Shop to purchase specialty bakery items and more!
Your attendance means you are supporting valuable programs at Blank Children's Hospital. Programs that would not be possible without the generous support of our community.
We invite you to attend Festival, volunteer at Festival or support Festival by making a contribution, decorating a tree or donating books.
