The Saturday Morning Furniture Makers Group meets the Saturday after the general Club meeting at 9:30 AM at the Woodsmith Store.

The Des Moines Woodworkers Board has decided to cancel all Club activities planned for April due to the COVID-19 outbreak. May activities will be evaluated in April.

Stay safe at home and get some woodworking done, everyone!

The Des Moines Woodworkers Board has decided to cancel all Club activities planned for April and May due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Future activities will be evaluated over the summer and as the State of Iowa updates their guidance for large assemblies.

The October meeting of the Saturday Morning Furniture Makers will be presented by Chuck Hass. His topic will be the building of the Jefferson lap desk. We will be meeting at Chuck’s place located at 175 9th Street, Unit 430, West Des Moines.

I hope that all of the Furniture Makers out there are well and have been able to stay away from the virus. I hope to be able to present something in November but will make not promises at this time.

The State Fair was good to me this summer and I was awarded Best of Show for a Federal legged table that I made. When I get back to the Saturday Morning group it will be to show some of the jigs and fixtures that I had to create in order to produce the inlays (round, oval and border inlays) and also the legs. It should be an interesting presentation as there is a lot of ground to cover.

The February meeting of the Saturday Morning Furniture Makers will be presented by member Eugene Harms, who also serves as our Librarian. 

Eugene will demonstrate of the art of Kumiko. Kumiko is created by assembling small wooden pieces into beautified patterns to make delicate art or enhance furniture. Eugene will discuss the tools and jigs used to prepare the wood, how the jigs are built, and how they're used to make the Kumiko patterns. He will demonstrate the making of a few Kumiko patterns and talk about the frames and the backing used to enhance the finished projects.

We encourage everyone to bring new processes from your shop that you have discovered. If you have something new in your shop that can benefit others at the next meeting, then bring it!

The March meeting of the Saturday Morning Furniture Makers was presented by John Twedt, who demonstrated the technique of using hide glue to put together a radial match. You can treat veneers in a different way using hide glue, and it is very helpful in completing the radial match. He also brought along some Mechanical Models made from wood that were of great interest to the group assembled. Thanks to all who attended!
