The November 2019 general meeting will take place on November 12th, 2019 at the Woodsmith Store. Doors open at 6:30pm for social time, and you must arrive by 7pm when the Woodsmith store closes to customers to get in to the meeting.
Club member Tom Whalley will present on what he calls “crossover woodworking,” and will show how he creates his unique State Fair projects. Traditional woodworking and traditional woodturning are usually very different and use totally different tools and machines. Over the last 2 to 3 years, Tom has developed a fascination for what some folks might call “segmented woodturning”; however, he calls it “crossover woodworking.” That is because it uses woodworking tools as well as woodturning tools in harmony with results that are different from woodworking, woodturning, or segmented work on their own.
During the demonstration, Tom hopes to do two things: He will explain the techniques in creating the ribbon piece by using some drawings of the process. During this discussion, he plans to recreate a model similar to what he made prior to creating the actual piece you will see.
So many people have asked Tom how the streptohedron came about, so he might also go through this process from the initial layout through the steps of construction and talk about some of the jigs, etc, he used to make it. Tom will bring some of the trial pieces as well as photos and drawings to better show the process.
November is also our Annual Meeting as an organization, when we conduct elections for officers and review the financial state of the Association. If you're interested in volunteering for the club or getting more involved on a committee, this month is a good time to ask the current board and volunteers about how you can make a difference to YOUR Des Moines Woodworkers Association!
